Italy kicks Sicily, Denmark has a runny nose and the Americas look like a duck

I love maps. I’ve said that before, I think, but it’s a good thing to re-iterate ever so often. I loooove maps.

When I was a kid, I could spend hours looking through the encyclopaedia, just looking at the pictures and maps of countries…I can still get lost in a Wikipedia contry hop, where links take you from country to country around the world.

Being Danish, I’ve always known that some countries look like objects or people. Why, you ask.

Well, take a look at Jutland:

Look at the east coast. It looks like a guy with a runny nose, doesn’t it?

A more widely known example is Italy, which looks like its kicking the crap out of Sicily:

Then, of course, there is the curious case of North and South America. You need to manipulate the map a little (actually you just need to turn it on its side), but if you do, you end up with this:

You could, of course – if you have a lively imagination – extend this idea to all of a continent. Take Europe, for example:

  1. Very, very clever. Your time spent looking at maps has definitely paid dividends.

I’m also a map lover. I read the encyclopedia when I was a kid (hence my blog’s name), much of the time reading about countries and looking at maps. Aren’t they wonderful?
