Photos of Japan: Nijo Castle, Kyoto

Nijo Castle stands in the centre of Kyoto, the beating heart of old Japan as Tokyo is of the new.

It’s most famous, perhaps, for its nightingale floors, which squeak as you walk on them, making sneak attacks and assassins impossible.

Of course, this was more useful when it was the Kyoto seat of the Tokugawa shoguns and not, as is the case today, a UNESCO world heritage site.

Sadly, it’s not allowed to take photos inside, so here are a few shots from the castle grounds.
